Our first Nature Book Guide event!

A warm thank you to everyone who came out Friday, April 28 for our first public event for Nature Book Guide! We were hosted by the wonderful independent bookseller, Sidekick Coffee & Books, of Iowa City, Iowa, (a UNESCO City of Literature!) and Body Moves Fitness and Wellness Center, of Coralville, Iowa. A terrific crowd of 25-30 folks packed the event space of this lovely bookshop for a conversation about books on nature and climate.

Comments from participants:
”I have a long book list after your warm and enthusiastic book review!”

”It was an inspiring event, Beth and now I have a long list of books that I’m looking forward to reading! Thank you very much.”

We were invited by Body Moves to take part in their 10th anniversary and World T’ai Chi Day festivities. Coincidentally, World T’ai Chi Day is the same day as the 10th anniversary of Independent Bookstore Day. Sidekick provided a display of books to celebrate Earth Day, and comfortable seating and access to their well-appointed drink and snack bar of pastries, quiche, cookies, and other baked goods.

Attendees had terrific questions and recommendations for future issues of Nature Book Guide and were given the opportunity to weigh in on their preferences for the cover of the Summer Issue, scheduled to be released on June 1. Sidekick sold quite a few books the day of the event, a bonus as we love supporting independent book sellers.

Our heartfelt thanks to all who made it out last Friday, to Sidekick and Body Moves for your generosity in organizing and hosting the event, and to Body Moves for the use of their photos!

As a high school student in the Youth Conservation Corps, Beth built trails and trail bridges in Illinois state parks. Mid-career, she led the Texas Mountain Trail as Executive Director for a decade, and through a partnership with Texas Parks and Wildlife, developed the Far West Texas Wildlife Trail and map. Before retiring in 2021, she led the Sand Creek Regional Greenway Partnership, an organization supporting an urban trail along a riparian corridor in the Denver metro area. She's organized countless volunteer opportunities to connect others to science and the outdoors; founding the Nature Book Guide was another effort to do the same.
